LSI Extends Asymmetric Multicore Solutions With New End-to-End Portfolio for Wireless Applications

Next-generation multicore silicon, Virtual Pipeline(TM) technology and extensive software portfolio enable any-to-any communication for mobile networks

MILPITAS, Calif., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Corporation today introduced a new portfolio of asymmetric multicore silicon solutions and software for wireless applications. Built upon previous generations of industry-leading LSI wireless infrastructure solutions and designed to provide increased levels of intelligence, control and security for wireless networks, these next-generation processors are the realization of the asymmetric multicore blueprint first announced by LSI at Mobile World Congress in 2009.

The LSI asymmetric multicore architecture allows powerful purpose-built processors to be combined with PowerPC(TM) 476FP multicore processors. The asymmetric multicore architecture features new Virtual Pipeline(TM) messaging-passing technology, an industry-first, deterministic method that efficiently moves data between on-chip processors. The new LSI portfolio enables solutions for any-to-any wireless communications and provides a clear path to realizing a single-chip base station.

"With a unified architecture, manufacturers don't waste time and resources dealing with the challenge of integrating proprietary components from multiple sources that were not designed to work together," said Godfrey Chua, research manager, Wireless and Mobile Infrastructure, IDC. "A unified multicore architecture portfolio specifically designed for mobile networks will help wireless equipment manufacturers drive cost and performance through higher levels of integration."

The innovative asymmetric multicore architecture combines industry-leading LSI capabilities such as traffic management, QoS, voice and video transcoding, security processing and deep packet inspection. Designed for easy integration and rapid migration, the LSI advanced communication processor portfolio provides all of the key capabilities required for access, mobile backhaul and gateway applications.

"LSI has built upon the industry's most complete portfolio of processors targeted at wireless applications," said Jim Anderson, vice president and general manager, Networking Components Division, LSI. "By expanding and upgrading its entire portfolio around a common architecture, LSI has enabled wireless OEMs to cost-effectively meet the power and performance demands of service providers."

The LSI(TM) Axxia(TM) Communication Processor family, also announced today, is the first product line to feature multiprocessor cores connected via the LSI Virtual Pipeline technology. The overall LSI networking portfolio consists of communication processors, media and baseband processors, echo cancellation software, voice and video codecs, multi-service processors and high-performance content inspection processors.

LSI is showcasing its wireless infrastructure for mobile access, transport, gateway and data center applications in stand AV64 at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, February 15 to 18. The LSI stand is located in the Avenue Pavilion near Hall 8 of the exhibition.

As part of a comprehensive Multicore Done Right(TM) approach, the new LSI portfolio provides best-in-class solutions for wireless infrastructure. Additional information on all the multicore LSI solutions for wireless infrastructure can be found on the LSI website at:
