Dr. Herbert Pardes Honored by New York Academy of Sciences

Newswise - Dr. Herbert Pardes, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, was honored by the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) for his leadership in making New York City a center of scientific excellence.

The "Science & The City Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in New York City" was presented at the Academy's 5th annual "Science & the City" gala on Nov. 17 in New York.

"The Academy is thrilled to honor Dr. Pardes, who has long been one of the great leaders in the worlds of science and medicine," said NYAS President Ellis Rubinstein. "He has devoted his tenure as president of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital to bringing together the best in scientific research and medical practice to conquer disease and improve health. His achievements should make all New Yorkers proud."

I am tremendously proud of the many medical research initiatives by NewYork-Presbyterian and our academic partners --Columbia University Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical College -- that have led to treatment breakthroughs in areas as diverse as heart disease, cancer and Parkinson's disease. By supporting science, we are investing in our future, finding new ways to fight disease and remain healthy and active into old age," said Dr. Pardes.

Also receiving a "NYAS Science & the City Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in New York City" was Sir Paul Nurse, president of The Rockefeller University.

In addition, the gala event named five outstanding faculty and postdoctoral fellows with the second annual New York Academy of Sciences Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists, recognizing the achievements of young scientists and engineers from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut who have contributed significantly to interdisciplinary research in the life sciences, physical sciences and engineering. The Academy also presented NYAS Innovation in Industry Awards, celebrating the excellence of young scientists and engineers in industry, recognizing their contributions to "high impact" research, development and innovation.

Dr. Herbert Pardes
Dr. Herbert Pardes is nationally recognized for his broad expertise in education, research, clinical care, mental health and health policy. Prior to joining the Hospital in 1999, Dr. Pardes served as vice president for health sciences at Columbia University and dean of the faculty of medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He served as director of the National Institute of Mental Health and U.S. assistant surgeon general during the Carter and Reagan administrations, and was also president of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Pardes has been appointed to serve on health policy commissions by Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, including the Presidential Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Healthcare Industry, and the Commission on Systemic Interoperability. He is the former chairman of the Greater New York Hospital Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the New York Association of Medical Schools. Dr. Pardes is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and earned the Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health from the Institute of Medicine.
